NOV 09 NEWSLETTER

Hi All,What’s been Happening !
It was lovely to have Val from Tai Chi at our last meeting. Qigong is an integral component of Chinese health system that combines physical movement, mental cultivation and regulated breathing. This activity is designed to guide and induce the free flow of energy Qi throughout the body, maintaining the harmony of Yin and Yang, which promotes health and a greater sense of well being.
Saturday saw us at the Breacan Forum in Frankston. It was a great day over 30 women with breast or gynaecological cancer at all stages of their journeys. Maria a psychologist facilitated an interactive session which was great. Breacan services were discussed- perhaps we all need to travel up in a group one day to have a look around (and shop and lunch!). They run great forums in Melbourne frequently. Local services were also discussed. Our mate Judy Sammut was there, she will come in March to talk about exercise and the Encore Frankston session in Term 2, 2010.The food was good, our friends from Beleura and the Peninsula Dragonflys were there too! Kate had Wig Library info, she is always on the lookout for volunteers to help. Call the PPH Chemo ward for further info. The afternoon sessions included Art Therapy, Dance and also Val did Tai Chi again.
Many of us attended Judith Burkes funeral this month. It was a lovely service and the wonderful Dragonflys gave her a guard of honour that she would have loved. Our thoughts are with Bernie , Mary and all her family.
Under the Breast Intentions banner there have been suggestions of a younger group and an ABC (advanced cancer group). These could be day or night time ( both suggested) in the hospital or at a coffee shop, or even a Google group which allows internet conversations that only people invited to the group can access. Let us know what you think. There would still be the one newsletter and all are invited to the Wed meeting especially if there are guest speakers. People have also offered to help with the group which I think is fantastic. 2010 I would love a couple of people to join me at the Cancer Council for a day to attend a facilitators course. Let me know if you are interested.
Elspeth will do a library list which we can post on the Blog site to remind you of the book and, CDs that are available for loan.
(Goddess’s of the Month) ::
A special message to our lovely friends Sandra G & Sandra N and Chrissy, hopefully you are all feeling a better – thinking of you

BIG thanks to you ALL – from our Jo!
I would like to thank everyone involved at the Main St Food & Wine Festival minifield. It was a terrific day, the sun was out the crowds were good and we had fun! Our new banner was shown for the first time along with the Gazebo. Our friends the Dragonflys were next door and it was fabulous to catch up with the gals. They are always on the lookout for new members. It is on my bucket list. They are off to Canberra so best of luck gals!
We raised about $400 for Breast Intentions, $600 for BCNA and the Dragonflys about $1000. More importantly some women (and men) came and spoke individually to our members to receive info, tell a story or just have a chat. We also got to enjoy some fabulous food and ran into most of the peninsula.
Friday saw us at Cruden Farm BCNA Minifield, helping the Mornington Peninsula Wig Library raise much needed funds to purchase new wigs. They have approximately 200 wigs out on loan at the moment. It was a great day- credit goes to Kate Smith and Virginia Howard (PPH Chemo Ward) for the organisation. Thank you again to our beautiful Lee Murphy who with her friends sang their hearts out. They were absolutely magic. Our thoughts are with Lee as her mum is receiving treatment again, you are both in our thoughts and prayers. Jo Johnsons’ daughter Holly once again sang beautifully for the crowd. The gardens also looked fantastic. Channel 10 were there and we hope to see some of our smiling and crying faces on Monday 26th with David and Kim. Thank you to all who gave up their day to help. We met old friends and made some new ones as well. Once again the banner and gazebo were put to good use. We had some lovely comments about the ‘Intent on Life’ slogan. Breast Intentions manned the BCNA stall and sold about $600 of merchandise. Our silhouettes from Main St were displayed again.
Thank you again. You never ceased to inspire me. Love Jo

Receipes For Living

15 October 2009
Recipes for Living – Finding the new ‘normal’ after a cancer
diagnosis
A free public forum for women living with breast cancer or a gynaecological cancer.
BreaCan, a gynaecological and breast cancer support service, is hosting a free public forum
for women living with breast cancer or a gynaecological cancer, their family and friends on
Saturday, November 14th in Frankston.
Jo Lovelock, a Mornington based Breast Care Nurse and breast cancer survivor of 6 years,
said this is a great opportunity for women living in the area to connect with each other.
“The Recipes for Living forum is designed to give women with cancer an opportunity to
meet informally and to share their experiences. Women will also be able to find out more
about local services and supports” Ms Lovelock said.
“I hope women attending the forum will gain important information and ideas on living with a
cancer diagnosis, whether it is during treatment or sometime after. I’m also really hoping
that women with advanced disease will join the forum to link together, as there are many
living with advanced cancer on the peninsula.”
Di Missen, Manager of BreaCan, said the forum will give women a chance to access
information, participate in a variety of activities and to connect with other women in a similar
situation living in their local area.
“The forum will feature a presentation by Maria Ftanou, Psychologist from Peter
MacCallum, on finding your ‘new normal’ after a cancer diagnosis. The key focus will be on
how a cancer diagnosis impacts many facets of a women’s life, and what practical tools
women can use to assist with living well” Ms Missen said.
“There will also be an opportunity for women to participate in one of three enjoyable and
creative workshops, which aim to be informative and fun.”
Recipes for Living – A forum for women living with breast or a gynaecological cancer is
being held at the Best Western Frankston International, 389 Nepean Highway, Frankston
on Saturday, November 14th between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
To register your interest and for more information please contact the BreaCan Resource
Centre on 1300 781 500 or email breacan@breacan.org.au
BreaCan is a gynaecological and breast cancer support service located on the ground floor of the Queen
Victoria Women’s Centre. BreaCan provides information and support through its resource centre which is open
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10am – 2pm. The resource centre is staffed by trained volunteers who have
personally experienced breast or gynaecological cancer. BreaCan is a service of Women’s Health Victoria and
funded by the Department of Health. BreaCan receives over 2000 contacts for support or information each year.

FRANKSTON FORUM & BRECAN

Upcoming Forum: BreaCan will be hosting a forum for women living on the Mornington Peninsula who have been diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers on Saturday 14 November. While part of the forum will be about providing information, it will also be a chance to talk to meet other women with similar experiences.
There are at least three (and many more) good reasons to come to the forum:
· Maria Ftanou, Psychologist from Peter Mac will be the guest speaker and will talk about how you find the “new normal” after a cancer diagnosis — and practical strategies about living with uncertainty.
· You will have the opportunity to connect with other women from your local area and share your experiences.
· You can be part of an enjoyable and therapeutic workshop — maybe an art or dance workshop
·
A participant at a previous forum said “I didn’t know what to expect, but it was good to listen to someone explain how I was feeling”.
The forum will be held in Frankston and program details will be finalised shortly. Please get the date in your diary!

AMAZON HEART THUNDER AUSTRALIA 09

Arrived in Brisbane, planes delayed, torrential downpour and all my luggage got wet! We taxied out to the ferry to get to Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island and it was delayed….. Upon arrival we were advised to take shoes & socks off roll up pants and wade through the water to our rooms. Not a great start to a motorcycle adventure! Harley Davidson Australia loaned us bikes for the trip.
The practice bike day on the race track for the next day was cancelled (it was under water and 100k winds) and we had our first briefing. 40 women all having had treatment, or still undergoing treatment for breast cancer ( some living or as we have decided thriving with metastatic cancer) from Australia, USA, NZ, South Africa & Hong Kong aged from 30s to late 50s, 31 bikes and 3 support vans. Some had learnt to ride a motorcycle just to go on the ride, some rode every day and others like me hadn’t ridden for 20 years. We also had a researcher travelling with us. That night a few wines & karaoke broke the ice and those of us who hadn’t met before became friends. As we didn’t have to ride the next day and the sun came out we were offered options including quad biking, kayaking, sand tobogganing, 4 wheel driving or just lazing around. Mingi from Hong Kong & I went kayaking, tobogganing & swimming (it was a bit cool…). That night we got to hand feed wild (well almost) dolphins.
The next day we headed out to Morgan & Wacker a Harley Davidson dealer in Brisbane, to start the ride. Having never ridden a Harley before, and with no practice it was an adventure just getting out of the dealers! I was allocated a Fat Bob (who I loved and called BOB) which was about twice the engine size of my Suzuki 650. We had a police escort for the first part & managed to safely leave Brisbane, through traffic, in state patrol formation - not a bad effort. A lot of time & effort had gone into the ride and we were in small groups within the large group keeping our international riders on the left side of the road. Our first night was Warwick.
We left Warwick and it rained, and rained and rained. We rode through a natural disaster that we didn’t create! Harleys are traditionally (so we thought) ridden in good weather….. we rode through mud, river crossings, road works and got re routed a lot, roads closed, flooded, bridges washed away. We missed our media stops, food stops and sometimes our turn offs. The highlight of the day was the Woodenbong CWAs biggest morning tea for cancer. I assumed that we had been invited to it but we actually crashed it .It was a welcome sight, dry, hot teat/coffee & lots of food. The ladies went and restocked for us. Then the locals all came out to wave us off. Apparently each year someone crashes it! There was some urgency to get out of town as the only road out was starting to go under… we rode through about 10cm of water. The day continued more of the same viz was appalling, and we missed Byron Bay but safely made Lennox Head for the night.
The next day- yea no downpours just drizzle. Still roads were closed and our way into Coffs Harbor was changed. We had 2 bikes broken down by now, but there was plenty of room in the dry support vans.
Breakfast at Coffs Harbour Harley dealers I was greeted by one of our own Breast Intentions Support group members Jenny, who had moved north. Our route again changed and we headed through some fantastic roads through rain forests and mountains toward Armidale. It was the best morning of riding we had clear skies and dry roads. Our overseas visitors were thrilled to see lots of kangaroos in the paddocks. One got up close & personal with Sandra and she wasn’t too pleased. Alas after missing a turn and back tracking we had to ride on into the night. This was a hard long day; luckily we had 2 spare riders as the ride was taking its toll on some of the women. We reached Walcha in the dark, cold & after a group dinner we fell into bed.
But the next day up and at ‘em again. A beautiful day riding of through the hills, encountering log trucks and introducing the visitors to droving cattle feeding on the side of the road. The older cows, happy and ignoring us, but the young heifers were not too keen on 29 loud Harleys. One broke away from the mob and of course decided to get up close with a member of our group. We were all expecting it to run through us and it did! Evasive action taken and no dramas. We made a lunch put on by the local breast cancer support group and the local Ulysses group met us as well. Newcastle awaited, and we headed out for dinner.
Breakfast at Frasers Harley dealers and we headed out to Wollombi pub - a great ride and a great lunch. We followed the Hawkesbury River and got to do several ferry crossings, arriving at Wisemans Ferry for the night. Finally I felt up to a night of partying, singing & dancing. We had the place to ourselves (which was not a bad thing as those of you who have heard me sing will agree to!)
The next day ferries, good weather and a fabulous ride along Bells Line of Road with amazing views of the Blue Mountains. A quick visit to the Three Sisters Lookout for a photo shoot before dinner, our last as a group.
Last day on to Springwood at Oriental Hotel for an organized lunch. The last couple of days were much more civilized riding and how I expected most of the ride to be. We made it through Sydney in formation, over the Harbour Bridge an awesome sight. We finished at Frasers Harley dealers at Concord where I sadly had to give back my keys to Bob back. My mate Heyzie who couldn’t make the ride flew up for the finish and after party. This ride was for both of us.
The ride was exceptionally well organized and executed. The women were all different and all amazing in their own ways. We came from varied backgrounds but all gelled together to work together as a group. People shared their lives, laughs and tears as well as their Harleys! Together we raised over $95,000 for breast cancer, and rode over 2000ks. I have made friends that will stay with me forever. It was not the ride I was expecting but definitely the ride of my life.
I thank all of you who supported me in achieving this goal. It is one I will never forget.
(Next holiday Andrew & I will be lounging on a beach snorkeling being fed & watered.)
Cheers Jo

FEB 2009 NEWSLETTER

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a lovely break over Christmas and the New Year, seems a long time ago now that we are all back into the swing of our routines. Had a great first meeting for the year on 4th February, with lots to discuss and decisions to be made for this year. A summary below:

BI Bank
We have a balance of $822 in our account, $350 of which is a grant received from Department of Health Services - Thanks to Jo for submitting an application and succeeding.

We Need Our Own Banner
After holding our stall at the Mornington Wine and Food Fest, it was obvious we need to have our own banner to display and promote us at such functions. The meeting decided the background should be white, with pink logo, and from there we were stuck. We've decided to run a competition with suggestions of design for the banner, final decision by vote. The Peninsula Dragon Flies have a great banner, with shades of pink and purple dragon flies, and the slogan "Paddling for Life". We need something similar - a really catchy, meaningful slogan on an eye catching banner [sorry, no boobs !].

We'll run the competition for the next couple of months, winner will receive a Peninsula Health Medispa gift voucher. So get those creative minds working, and bring any suggestions and designs to the next meeting, we'll collate and run in each Newsletter until the conclusion of the competition.

Breast Intentions T Shirts
We are looking at costs of having our own T Shirts - those involved will bring the info to the next meeting. If you have any contacts in this area, please contact Jo.

An Article from the Cancer Council Newsletter
Jo found this article in a recent Cancer Council Newsletter and thought it worth sharing:
Positive thinking does not improve breast cancer outcomes
The state of mind of women with breast cancer has no influence on their chance of having a recurrence or survival, according to a recent study. This research contradicts widespread belief in the power of positive thinking. The paper ‘ Psychosocial Factors and Survival of Young Women with Breast Cancer’ found no correlation between a breast cancer patients mental wellbeing and their ultimate chances of avoiding recurrence and surviving the disease. A diagnosis of breast cancer is frequently associated with psychological distress and many patients believe that their psychological response affects their prognosis. Previous research has produced conflicting results. These findings provide the strongest evidence to date that while there can be lots of emotional and social benefits of thinking positively, including improving quality of life, a positive frame of mind does not have a significant effect on breast cancer recurrence or survival. Many women blame themselves for not having had a positive enough attitude. We can now tell them that it would not have changed their outcome. Associate Professor Kelly-Anne Phillips CCV & Peter Mac Callum CC
The Cancer Council is running Telephone & Internet Support Groups - support for people with cancer within the comfort and privacy of home. These groups operate via teleconference [using a normal phone] or real-time private chat room over the internet. These groups are professionally facilitated, and meet weekly one hour over a period of 6 - 8 weeks. These groups are available for people with advanced cancer, in the 20 - 50 age group, 2 years post treatment, cancer survivors, carers of people with cancer. More info 13 11 20, or visit www.cancervic.org.au; or email csg@cancervic.or.au.

News from BCNA – www.bcna..org.au
Medicare Rebates for Annual MRI

You may recall that in late December the Federal Government announced a new scheme to provide Medicare rebates for annual MRI scans for women at high risk of developing breast cancer. BCNA is pleased to announce that the rebate commenced 2 February 2009.
To be eligible for the rebate, women must be under the age of 50 and have either have a known genetic mutation or a strong family history of breast cancer. The rebate does not apply to women who have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer. In addition, referrals for MRI must be made by a specialist, and must be conducted on a Medicare-eligible MRI unit. A list of eligible units will soon be published and we will update you when this information is available.
For more information about the eligibility criteria, and what constitutes strong family history, visit the BCNA website. If you have any questions or comments about the rebate, please feel free to contact BCNA by email policy@bcna.org.au or phone 1800 500 258 (freecall).

Two Surveys/Documentary - See articles below from BCNA

1. "I am making a documentary focusing on the long term impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on women who were 45 or younger when they were diagnosed. Entitled The Road Back to Tomorrow, the film will explore the impact on life today when we think that we may not have a tomorrow.
The impetus for the documentary comes both from my own experience (I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 in 2004) and from what I see in contemporary media. Stories tend to look at the immediate impact of diagnosis and treatment, or on the women who die from the disease. There is little if anything in the general media about the longer-term psychological journey of recovery, about how women find their way slowly back to a sense of tomorrow and about the decisions they make along the way, many of which have far reaching implications.
Further information is available at http://www.robynwinslow.com.au/sonnette/projects.html
I am looking for women who were diagnosed when under the age of 45 and who are at least five years on from that experience. I encourage you to view the material on the website and, if you would like to be considered for a profile within the documentary, please submit an expression of interest through the website.
Robyn Winslow, Director"
2. From Research & Policy Officer - BCNA:
As a member of our Review & Survey Group I'd like to let you know about an opportunity to participate in an important research study about young women and the fear of cancer recurrence. The research is being conducted by Dr. Belinda Thewes and Professor Phyllis Butow at the School of Psychology from the University of Sydney . It would be great if you could have a read and see if you are able to participate. This research study will provide vital information about the experience of young women survivors of breast cancer and the impact that fear of cancer recurrence has on their lives. The researchers are seeking 200 women to participate in this project. What's involved?
Initially, the completion of a 45-60 minute secure online questionnaire;
A second follow up online questionnaire of approximately 5-10 minutes two weeks later;
If you do not wish to complete the survey online, paper copies of the survey along with pre paid return envelopes will be provided;
A few participants will be invited to take part in a follow up telephone interview. This is part of the study is optional.
Who's eligible to take part? Women who:
Were diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer (stage 0-2) at least 1 year ago;
Were aged 45 years or younger at the time of diagnosis;
Have not had a recurrence of their cancer.
How do you get involved? If you would like to participate or find out more information, please contact Dr Belinda Thewes on (02) 9036 7207 or email at bthewes@usyd.edu.au.

Next Meeting:
Wednesday 4th March – The Bays Hospital - 7.00 pm
April !st where the raffle will be drawn

Moving On
Ian and I are moving to live in Cairns , for a new life, and to spend time with our daughter Jane, granddaughter Iluka, and son in law Mitch. We have sold our house [finally] and settlement is 1st May. It will be very hard leaving our son Matt and his wife Clare, they will have to visit us often. The next meeting will be my last with the group, unless I'm back in Melbourne around the first Wednesday of the month for any of my BC appointments and then I'll definitely come along and catch up with everyone.

I don't think I can put into words how grateful I am for the support, wisdom, fun and love I have received from you very special, beautiful ladies, especially in the early days after diagnosis and treatment. Our mutual journey leads us on a fragile path, and I am blessed that I have your friendship and encouragement along the way.

Newsletter
So now, of course, there's a vacancy for putting the Newsletter together. Jo usually sends me Cancer Council stuff, the rest we usually talk about at the meetings, and I put it together. It's pretty easy. If you are interested in doing the Newsletter, please contact Jo or me.

See you at the next meeting.

Take care,
Jann
